This 1880 victorian had been remodeled and “modernized” over the years. The aluminum siding was removed and the original wood and shingle siding restored. The front picture window was replaced with french doors out to a new front porch, designed to be sympathetic to the original house and recreate an original porch which had been removed. The kitchen was relocated to a family room in the rear of the house and opened up to the formal dining room. Contemporary trim in the interior was replaced with traditional trim, interior doorways were heightened and a victorian style spindle screen was built to divide two front parlors which had been opened up in a previous remodeling. In addition an attached woodworking shop was designed to echo the shape and proportions of the existing house. This home received a preservation award from the City of Wilmette. |
